The results show that about 530 Twitter employees have left in the past 90 days, about 60% more than in the previous quarter. More than 1100 people have left the company since Musk began buying Twitter shares in January. According to the latest figures, Twitter currently has about 7500 employees.

Punks&Pinstripe analysis found that nearly 30 per cent of employees who left Twitter in the past three months went to Google or Meta. At the same time, dozens of people have moved to other top social platforms, including Pinterest, LinkedIn, Snap and TikTok. Greg Larkin, chief executive of Punks&Pinstripe, also points out that many Twitter employees have moved to start-ups.

Twitter employees' concerns are not unreasonable, and Musk's acquisition will represent a major change in the company's culture. The billionaire may oust Parag Agrawal, the current chief executive of Twitter, or send employees back to work in the office, a move that has sparked a similar "wave of departures" in Tesla.

Musk is also known for expecting too much of his employees. He constantly sets lofty goals for his company and often wants his employees to burn the midnight oil. When Mr Musk first offered to buy Twitter, a former Tesla director joked that the social media company should "put on your sneakers now", implying "it's time to go".

In the end, mass employee turnover may be more in line with Mr Musk's plan. In a private text message, he joked with his old friend Jason Calacanis that bringing Twitter employees back to work could help kick-start a series of "gentleman layoffs" that would help the company avoid huge severance payments.

According to private information disclosed during Mr Musk's pre-trial investigation into the court battle between Mr Musk and Twitter, Mr Karakanis texted Mr Musk in April: "the requirement to work two days a week = 20 per cent of employees leave voluntarily."

Musk's $44 billion deal for Twitter is nearing its deadline, and he must complete the deal by 5pm EDT on the 28th, or he will go to court with Twitter in November.
