Connectivity has changed the way we live, work, and interact over the past few decades, and it's evolving, pushing the boundaries of what's possible with each new generation of mobile technology. Since 5G was commercialized for more than three years, it has not only realized ten times the "speed" of intergenerational experience, but also expanded the "breadth" from service consumers to digitalization of enabling industries.

On October 25, at the 13th Global Mobile Broadband Forum (MBBF2022) hosted by Huawei, Lara Dewar, chief marketing officer of GSMA, shared the latest 5G commercial progress in the world. She said that 234 mobile operators in 81 countries have launched commercial 5G services, and by the end of this year, there will be 1 billion 5G connections worldwide.

The future of mobile is smart connectivity Faced with today's more complex global challenges, the mobile industry will play a key role in enabling the transformation of thousands of industries. The vision of the GSMA is to unleash the power of connectivity to promote prosperity for people, industry and society.

Data shared by Lara Dewar shows that there are currently 5.3 billion mobile subscribers worldwide, equivalent to 67% of the global population. In 2021, the mobile industry contributed $4.5 trillion to the global economy, accounting for 5% of global GDP.

This shows that the importance of the mobile industry has been further enhanced.

"We believe resilient mobile connectivity has never been more important to society across economic segments. "Talking about how the mobile industry will develop in the future, Lara Dewar stressed that" the future of the mobile industry is intelligent connection, that is, 5G combines AI, IoT, big data and other digital technologies to enable the digital transformation of thousands of industries. "

It is worth mentioning that countries in the Asia-Pacific region will be the leaders in the development of 5G. By 2025, the GSMA expects the number of 5G connections in the Asia-Pacific region to reach 430 million, and in China, the number will approach 900 million.

Three factors to build a smarter 5G world With the widespread deployment of 5G around the world, the huge transformation value brought by it is increasingly prominent, but how to release greater value and bring commercial realization to more industries? Lara Dewar believes that it is necessary to ensure that 5G has good development conditions and create an ecosystem that benefits everyone. Investment, innovation and partnerships are the three key building blocks for the future 5G world.

First, the investment needs of global mobile operators between 2022 and 2025 are about $620 billion, of which about 85% will be spent on 5G networks. Therefore, in order to narrow the investment gap, the industry needs to explore and establish innovative financial models. At the same time, industry needs policymakers and regulators to invest time and effort in establishing flexible regulatory and policy frameworks that create the conditions for digital investment and innovation to flourish.

Second, industry needs to use innovation to enhance the ability of digital transformation in all walks of life. At present, the commercial value of 5G in all walks of life has been released, but to achieve economies of scale, some application scenarios need to be selected to turn 5G from optional technology to essential technology. To achieve this goal, GSMA launched the 5G Transformation Case Sharing Center at Mobile World Congress Barcelona in February this year, bringing together the world's most innovative 5G application cases, including transportation, sports, energy, construction, government and many other fields; in July, it launched the 5G Industry Challenge, calling on operators, governments and vertical industries to share 5G use cases and demonstrate the transformative power of connectivity.

Finally, and most importantly, there is one essential element: partnership. Facing the future, we hope that the industry can build some global communities, build 5G ecology, and fully release the value and benefits of 5G. A good example of this is the Asia Pacific 5G industry community, which brings together mobile operators, government agencies, 5G technology leaders, and companies such as Huawei, and is making amazing progress, including promoting 5G investment and piloting relevant use cases in various industries and markets in Asia Pacific.
