Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--

CTOnews.com October 25 news, according to Taiwan's Industrial and Commercial Times reported that although the personal computer (PC) market demand is depressed, but Apple will still launch a number of new phones in the next few months, and Apple will also accelerate the second generation of Apple Silicon M2 processor research and development and mass production, according to industry news, Apple M2 processor will fight a core war, may launch the highest end M2 Extreme with 48 cores to attack high-end PC and workstation applications TSMC, the leader of wafer foundry, is expected to own the big order of 3 nanometer wafer foundry.

CTOnews.com learned that the M2 processor launched by Apple a few days ago uses TSMC's second-generation 5-nm process, with 8-core CPU and 10-core GPU. Compared with the previous M1 processor, the CPU speed and GPU performance are significantly improved.

Reported that the impact of global inflation led to low demand for PC in the second half of the year, but the new MacBook Air with M2 processor and the new 13-inch MacBook Pro sold better than expected. Apple plans to launch new MacBook Pro, Mac mini and Mac Pro in the coming months, along with an upgraded M2 series processor.

The report also said that according to industry news, Apple's follow-up M2 processor will fight a core battle, increase the number of processor cores to increase computing efficiency, and highlight the advantages of low power consumption of Arm processors. Among them, the M2 Pro processor codenamed Rhodes Chop is equipped with 10-core CPU and 20-core GPU, and is produced by TSMC 3 nm.

Like last year's M1 series of processors, Apple will also launch the M2 Max processor codenamed Rhodes 1C with 12-core CPU and 38-core GPU, and will launch the M2 Ultra processor codenamed Rhodes 2C. The number of CPU and GPU cores is double that of M2 Max.

Due to the maturity of small chip (chiplet) design and the smooth progress of TSMC's advanced packaging technology, it is reported that Apple may launch a M2 Extreme processor with two M2 Max integrated next year, with 48 cores of CPU and 152 cores of GPU. The industry pointed out that Apple's M2 Pro/Max/Extreme and other processors are mass-produced with TSMC's 3nm process, and if the M2 Extreme news is true, Apple's PC processor performance will catch up with Intel next year and become the market leader in Arm architecture processors.

TSMC did not comment on this, but the company pointed out in a legal person presentation a few days ago that it has observed that many customers have participated in 3nm, and that the number of designs finalized in the first two years before mass production will be more than twice that of 5nm. TSMC is working closely with machine suppliers to meet the challenges of machine delivery and to prepare more capacity for the 3nm process to support strong customer demand in 2023, 2024 and the future. It is confident that the 3nm family will become another large-scale and long-term process node for TSMC.
