Phoenix New Media Technology News Beijing time on October 25 news, the United States Pew Research Center for a new survey shows that more and more Americans get news through TikTok.

The proportion of Americans getting news from TikTok has tripled since 2020, according to the survey. Currently, about 10% of American adults often use the app to get news. Among adults under the age of 30, this proportion has jumped to 26%.

TikTok users are also changing the way they use the app, one of which is increasingly using it as a source of news. 1/3 of adult users on the app say they get news through the platform, up from 22% in 2020. TikTok is becoming more and more like a news app, in contrast to Pew's findings on other platforms, where news consumption is stagnant or declining.

Take Facebook as an example. In 2020, 54% of adults said they got news from the platform. Now, that number has fallen to 44%. Meanwhile, YouTube has been stable over the past few years, with about 1/3 users getting news on the platform.

26% of adults under 30 use TikTok to watch the news.

For young people, it is not surprising that TikTok may replace or supplement other sources as a place to find news. It was also reported last month that Generation Z (born between 1995 and 2009) is now using TikTok as a search engine.

TikTok was no longer a children's dance app a long time ago. Last year, users noticed that TikTok was recording major news events, and viewers were fascinated by its suffocating video updates. In February this year, online celebrities in the Russian-Ukrainian war entered the audience through an algorithm, recording the status of the conflict, and millions of people watched it through short videos. When the libel case between movie star Johnny Depp and his ex-wife Amber Amber Heard began, Depp's supporters posted a real-time trial update on TikTok, including analysis and conspiracy theories. As creators make a fuss on social media by supporting Depp's content, their audience is growing rapidly.

At the same time, as more and more people use TikTok to get news, the platform has been trying to contain false information related to topics such as the war between Russia and Ukraine, abortion, elections and the COVID-19 epidemic. A recent study by NewsGuard, a false information monitoring website, found that nearly 20 per cent of videos provided by TikTok searches contained false information.
