Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com Recently, researchers at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden, achieved data rates of more than 1Pbit / s using a single laser and a single optical chip, and the team successfully achieved a transmission rate of 1.84 Pbit/ s on a 37-core, 7.9-kilometer fiber using a single light source.
1Pbit=1048576Gbit=131072GB, 1.84 Pbit/ s is 241172.48 GB / s.
According to a press release from the Technical University of Denmark, they are the first researchers in the world to transmit more than one petabit per second (Pbit / s) using only a single laser and a single optical chip.
In the experiment, the researchers successfully transmitted 1.84 Pbit / s, which is equivalent to twice the global Internet traffic per second. and is carried by light from only one light source. The light source is a custom-designed optical chip that can use light from a single infrared laser to create a rainbow spectrum of multiple colors, that is, multiple frequencies. Therefore, one frequency (color) of a single laser can be multiplied into hundreds of frequencies (colors) in a single chip.
All colors are fixed at a certain frequency distance--like teeth on a comb--which is why it's called a frequency comb. Each color (or frequency) can then be isolated and used to imprint data. The frequencies can then be recombined and sent over fiber optics to transmit the data.
Experimental demonstrations show that a single chip can easily carry 1.84 Pbit / s, which would require more than 1000 lasers if the most advanced commercial equipment of the day was used. Victor Torres Company, a professor at Chalmers University of Technology, heads the research team that developed and manufactured the chip.
Professor Victor Torres Company said: "What makes this chip special is that it produces a frequency comb with ideal optical fiber communication characteristics, which has high light power and covers a wide bandwidth in the spectral region of interest for advanced optical communications. "
Interestingly, the chip is not optimized for this particular application. "In fact, certain characteristic parameters were achieved by coincidence rather than design, however, through our team's efforts it is now possible to reverse engineer the process and achieve highly reproducible microcombs for targeted applications in the telecommunications field. "
The solution offers the potential to replace hundreds of thousands of lasers located in Internet centers and data centers, all of which consume electricity and generate heat, and new research has the opportunity to contribute to enabling an Internet with a reduced climate footprint.
CTOnews.com understands that this research has been published in Nature Photonics, which can be viewed here.
