CTOnews.com, October 23 (Xinhua)-- dissatisfied with the country's proposed online News Act, Meta said it may prevent Canadian users from sharing news content in response to the latest Cmurl 18 bill proposal.
Earlier this year, the government introduced the online News Act, which aims to force platforms such as Facebook to establish revenue-sharing partnerships with local news organizations, a move that appears to emulate Australia's News Media bargaining Act, which was passed in early 2021 despite strong resistance from Google and Meta.
Meta said in a blog post on Friday that it wanted to be "transparent about the possibility that we might be forced to consider whether to continue to allow sharing of news content in Canada."
"We have been in contact with the Canadian public authorities on this legislation in a spirit of honest and fair debate, so we are surprised that we did not receive an invitation to attend, especially given that lawmakers have publicly claimed that the law is aimed at Facebook," Meta said after being refused an invitation by the House of Commons this week.
In fact, relations between the Canadian government and the giant have been strained since Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and former chief operating officer Cheryl Sandberg ignored subpoenas from the parliamentary ethics committee in 2019.
Pablo Rodriguez, the minister for cultural heritage, who sponsored the bill, accused Meta of using the same strategy used by the company in Australia.
"all we ask is for tech giants like Facebook to negotiate a fair deal with the news media when they profit from their work," he said in an interview with the National Post.
Among other objections, Meta claimed that news content was not an important source of revenue for the company. CTOnews.com learned that when Australia enacted the News Media bargaining Act, Meta protested and briefly cut off access to all news content in the country, but they eventually signed agreements with News Crop and other agencies.
