CTOnews.com, October 23, according to the Taiwan Economic Daily, the latest SEMI report points out that the global semiconductor manufacturer's 8-inch fab capacity is expected to increase by 20% from 2021 to 2025.

Chip manufacturers such as Shanghai Advanced Semiconductor, BYD Semiconductor, China Resources Microelectronics, Fuji Electronics, Infineon Technology, Anshi Semiconductor and STMicroelectronics have all announced plans to build new 8-inch wafer factories to meet growing market demand, SEMI said.

CTOnews.com learned that the report pointed out that automotive and power semiconductor wafer production capacity will lead by 58 per cent growth from 2021 to 2025, followed by MEMS growth of 21 per cent, foundry growth of 20 per cent and simulated growth of 14 per cent.

On a regional basis, SEMI said that the 8-inch wafer production capacity of the Chinese mainland region will grow by 66% in 2025, leading the world. This was followed by 35% in Southeast Asia, 11% in the Americas and Taiwan, 10% in Japan, 8% in Europe and the Middle East, and 2% in South Korea. In terms of total capacity, the Chinese mainland region continues to have the highest capacity in the world and its share of capacity continues to grow, accounting for about 21% of the total global 8-inch wafer capacity, while other regions rank in order: Japan, Taiwan, Europe and the Middle East, and the Americas.
