Strategy Analytics estimates that more than 250m refurbished smartphones will be sold this year, up from 200m a few years ago. Although this is only a drop in the bucket, the number of refurbished phones purchased by consumers is growing steadily. According to Strategy Analytics's chart, the region with the largest sales of refurbished equipment is the Asia-Pacific region, followed by Africa, the Middle East, North America, Western Europe, Central America and Latin America, Central and Eastern Europe.

According to a report released by the waste Electrical and Electronic equipment Forum, headquartered in Brussels, Belgium, it is estimated that 5.3 billion of the 16 billion mobile phones held by the global public will be abandoned or idle this year.

CTOnews.com learned that according to a survey conducted in six European countries between June and September 2022, many of the 5 billion abandoned phones were hoarded and left in drawers, cabinets or garages, rather than sending them for repair or recycling.
