As an important infrastructure of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area, 98% of the bridges and tunnels of the Shenjiang high-speed railway are Prida, of which the 13.69km-long Pearl River Estuary tunnel is a full-line control project and the deepest undersea tunnel in China. The tunnel has a maximum underwater depth of 115 meters and a maximum water pressure of 1.06 MPA. It traverses dozens of complex strata over a long distance. This kind of difficult construction is also rare in the world.

How to build the Cross Harbour Tunnel? Two tailor-made domestic shield machines, "Shenjiang No. 1" and "Shenjiang No. 2", are like giant "pangolins" cutting rock and breaking walls. The Pearl River Estuary tunnel project is located at the mouth of the Pearl River between Dongguan and Guangzhou. Construction began in July 2020, opening the first section of the Shenjiang high-speed railway. In 2021, "Shenjiang No.1" and "Shenjiang No.2" large diameter shield machines were put into use.

CTOnews.com learned that the shield machine is composed of a cutterhead, a shield and a matching trailer. The cutter head is the "piercing weapon" at the front end of the shield machine, which is inlaid with a large number of knives of different shapes. The shield is the mainframe part, which plays the role of supporting the excavation of the tunnel and protecting the internal components and equipment of the shield. "Shenjiang No. 2" has a total of 5 sections, with the walking mechanism in the front and the rear section.

According to reports, the Shenzhen-Jiang high-speed railway is an important part of the coastal passage of China's "eight vertical and eight horizontal" high-speed railway network. The line starts from the newly-built Xili Station in Shenzhen, passes westward through Dongguan City, Guangzhou City, Zhongshan City and Jiangmen City, and is connected to Jiangmen Station of the Zhanjiang Railway. The total length of the main line is 116 kilometers, and the construction period is 5.5 years.
