Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--

CTOnews.com, October 20-40% of the world's approximately 7000 known languages do not have a standard writing system. These languages without words bring a unique problem to the modern machine learning translation system, because translation usually requires the translation of oral language into written text, and then restore the text to pronunciation after translation. But Meta announced on October 19th that it had solved the problem with its latest open source language, artificial intelligence (AI).

Meta announced "the first speech translation system without words driven by artificial intelligence", which successfully translated Hokkienese, a spoken language mainly used in Taiwan.

CTOnews.com learned that the system is part of Meta's artificial intelligence project and is called the Universal Voice translator (UST). "the translation system is the first milestone in Meta's general speech translator project for artificial intelligence, which focuses on developing artificial intelligence systems that provide real-time voice-to-speech translation in all languages, even without text languages," Meta said in a statement. The project is working on the development of more real-time voice-to-speech translations to make it easier for meta-universe residents to interact.

Meta said that in the past, most artificial intelligence-driven language translation efforts focused on written languages, but one of its goals was to translate more languages that lacked a formal writing system. According to Meta, there are more than 7000 languages, but "more than 40 percent of the languages are mainly spoken, and there is no standard or well-known writing system."

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg demonstrated the system for translating Hokkienese in a video posted on Facebook and said Meta will open source the tool so that people can use the new artificial intelligence system to translate more languages.
