CTOnews.com, October 19 (Xinhua) TSMC was supposed to start producing chips using its 3nm process nodes last month, but according to a new report from Seeking Alpha, TSMC's production of 3nm chips has been postponed to the fourth quarter of 2022.

On the other hand, Samsung began producing chips using 3nm process nodes in June this year, ahead of TSMC. Even if TSMC starts producing 3nm chips this month, Samsung is still three months ahead.

However, Samsung currently produces very few 3nm chips, probably because the company needs more time to increase production. Because of its low production capacity, Samsung currently supplies only 3nm chips to a Chinese cryptocurrency company and has not yet reached a deal with large technology companies such as AMD or Qualcomm, which need very large quantities of chips.

CTOnews.com learned that when TSMC began to produce 3nm chips, it was a matter of concern whether Samsung OEM could increase its 3nm chip production. According to reports, most of TSMC's 3-nm chip production capacity will be used by Apple for its upcoming M3 chip.

Wei Zhijia, president of TSMC, said at a legal conference last week that customer demand for 3nm has exceeded TSMC's supply and will be fully loaded next year, in part because of the continuous machine delivery time. 3nm is expected to account for about 4-6 per cent of revenue next year.
