CTOnews.com, Oct. 19, Microsoft has previously revealed that it will set Windows Terminal as the default command line experience for Windows 11. For most of the history of the operating system, the Windows console host (Windows Console Host,conhost.exe) was used by default, and Microsoft has explained that migrating to new tools requires a great deal of effort. Windows Terminal is now the default experience terminal tool for the latest Windows 11 2022 optional updates.

Microsoft today released an out-of-band update patch for KB5019509 (Build 22621.675) OOB for Windows 11 22H2 users. This update brings tagged file explorer, adds overflow menus on the taskbar, and adds action suggestions for copied projects. However, Microsoft did not emphasize the changes to Windows Terminal in its initial release notes. Instead, Microsoft has published a blog post on the subject.

Users can open the Settings application and navigate to Privacy and Security > for developers, they will notice that the drop-down menu next to Terminal says "Let Windows decide". The latest update to Windows 11 uses Windows Terminal by default.

Microsoft says Windows Terminal wraps many of its users' favorite features, including multiple profiles, tags and panes, command palettes and customizations.

At present, the latest Windows 11 update is only an optional update and will be widely available on Tuesday next month. CTOnews.com has been informed that the command line tool will take effect after Windows Terminal 1.15 or later is installed.
