The "Earth system numerical Simulation device" (Earth System Numerical Simulation Facility) is a major scientific and technological infrastructure construction project of the 12th five-year Plan, with the Institute of Atmospheric Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences as the project construction legal person and Tsinghua University as the co-construction unit. it is the first in China with independent intellectual property rights, with the numerical simulation software of each circle of the earth system as the core, and the software and hardware indicators are adapted to each other. The scale and comprehensive technical level of the special earth system numerical simulation device is in the forefront of the world.

Through extensive recruitment from the community, the manager department and other layers of screening, the large device is called "Earthlab" in English, the Chinese name is "Huan", and the nickname "Huanhuan".

Main uses:

The device will study the physical, chemical and biological processes and interactions of the atmosphere, hydrosphere, cryosphere, lithosphere and biosphere of the earth system, and explore the effects of the above interactions on the earth system as a whole and on the regional environment of China.

The fusion of simulation and observation data can improve the accuracy of prediction, realize the quantitative description and simulation of the complex processes of the earth system at mesoscale resolution, and provide scientific support for national disaster prevention and mitigation, climate change, atmospheric environment governance and other major issues.

Promote the interdisciplinary intersection and integration of different disciplines of earth system science, and promote China's earth system science as a whole to leap to the international first-class level.

The construction of the device includes earth system model numerical simulation system, regional high-precision environmental simulation system, super simulation support and management system, support database and data assimilation and visualization system, geoscience-oriented high-performance computing system, and civil supporting facilities.

CTOnews.com learned that the device is located in the Miyun Economic Development Zone in the east of Huairou Science City. it is not only an important part of Beijing National Comprehensive Science Center, but also an important part of Beijing Science and Technology Innovation Center and Huairou Science City. The total investment of the project is 1.25521 billion yuan, the construction area is 24310 square meters, and the construction period is 4 years. The project was fully started in November 2018, the main structure was capped in April 2019, the civil project was completed by the end of 2020, and the construction task was completed in March 2022.

At the acceptance meeting, the leaders of the five professional groups of Jian'an, technology, equipment assets, finance and archives read out the acceptance opinions of the professional group, and learned about the facilities through four forecasting systems, such as on-site visits and watching climate change. Through the cross-integration of different disciplines of earth system science and the accumulation of superior forces, after four years of arduous construction, the installation team has overcome the technical problems such as multi-layer coupling simulation. the construction tasks approved by the National Development and Reform Commission have been completed on schedule, comprehensively and at a high level, and various indicators have reached or better than the approved acceptance targets.
