On October 16, 2013, Sony officially released the α 7 and α 7R full-frame micro-single camera, marking a new stage in the development of non-reverse / micro-single cameras. After that, Leica, Nikon, Canon, Panasonic, Shima have also launched similar products, SLR / micro-SLR has also replaced the SLR as the most mainstream interchangeable lens camera.

On the day when the full micro order enters its 10th year, let's look back at the origin and re-examine the original product.

Product Overview Sony α 7 and α 7R were released in October 2013. As the first batch of full-frame micro-single, its size, weight and price are very competitive-- the selling price of α 7 is 9580 yuan, and the selling price of α 7R is 13580 yuan, which is lower than that of near-pixel full-frame SLR in the same period.

The earliest full-view microsingle what we usually call a mirrorless / microsingle camera needs to include interchangeable lenses, no reflectors, and electronic viewfinding. by this standard, the typ M (Leica 240,240,240real-time viewfinder), Sony α 99 and NEX-VG900 released in September 2012 can also be counted as full-picture microphones.

So camera classification actually has to follow the "convention", such as Leica Big M is a paraxial camera, Sony α 99 is a single electric camera, Sony NEX-VG900 is an interchangeable lens camera (even if it has a mechanical shutter, it can take RAW photos). In the statistics of non-negative / micro-single, we generally do not include Sony FX series, Panasonic BS1H, DJI, such as Shadow 4D and other camera products.

Quick comment on α 7 / α 7R is not a product mature enough in design. Compared with follow-up products such as α 7II, we can see many improvements of Sony in bayonet reliability, CMOS surface anti-reflection coating, shutter button position, RAW format coding, battery life and so on. The α 7 / α 7R (and α 7S) really highlighted the word "micro" in Sony's early full-picture micro-single products-- after that, the performance, size and weight of the products became stronger and bigger. It was not until the debut of α 7C in September 2020 that people regained the feeling of "micro".

* the bayonet of α 7 / α 7R is not made of all-metal material, and when combined with some long lenses and heavy lenses, poor contact may occur due to deformation (specifically, the fuselage can not recognize the lens, can not focus and control the aperture). Third-party manufacturers have launched bayonet replacements, but fewer are still being sold.

Compared with the product itself, the greater significance of the α 7 / α 7R is to support the "eye AF" function (formerly known as "eye-controlled AF"), which became the "moat" function of Sony cameras for a long time.

* Sony is not the first manufacturer to support eye AF, but full frame + eye AF forms a big advantage over traditional DSLRs.

The current second-hand price of α 7 / α 7R is not bad, but for most friends, their experience is not very good (especially the shutter delay and machine shock of α 7R). It is a good choice to change the machine to shoot infrared and starry themes.

One more thing: I don't think Sony's full-frame micro-order is more mature until α-7RII. Therefore, even if you buy second-hand products, it is recommended to give priority to α 7RII, α 9, α 7III or later products.
