CTOnews.com, October 18 (Xinhua)-- scientists have developed a new way to provide information for 3D printed foods by printing a QR code in the food itself. This does not affect the taste or appearance of the food, nor does it require the use of any labels.

The 3D printed edible QR code (left) and the finished cookies containing it are called "interiqr" ("internal QR") and were developed by a team at Osaka University in Japan. As a proof of concept, researchers recently printed some biscuits in 3D, which are smooth and look like ordinary cookies, but have a QR code pattern with a gap inside.

Although these patterns are not visible under normal lighting, you will see a silhouette of the QR code when you illuminate from behind and look at the cookies from the front. Then you can use an ordinary smartphone to recognize the QR code and read out the data stored in it.

Obviously, at present, the technology will be limited to relatively thin, somewhat translucent 3D printed food. Still, scientists hope it will eventually provide manufacturers, retailers and consumers with an alternative to more wasteful and expensive methods, such as paper labels routinely applied to fruits or RFID labels applied to packaging. If information such as ingredients and nutrients can be conveyed by the food itself, less packaging can be used.

"our 3D printing method is a good example of the digital transformation of food, which we hope will improve food traceability and safety," said Hirosuke Sato, senior author of the study. The technology can also be used to provide novel food experiences through augmented reality technology, which is an exciting new area in the food industry. "

CTOnews.com learned that the team will present a paper on the research at the 35th ACM user Interface Software and Technology Symposium later this month.
