CTOnews.com, October 18 (Xinhua)-- semiconductor manufacturer GlobalFoundries has announced that it has received $30 million (about 216 million yuan) in government federal funding for the development and production of advanced semiconductors at its Essex Junction plant in Vermont. The money is part of the Consolidated appropriation Act of 2022.

CTOnews.com learned that the money would be used to develop and implement gallium nitride semiconductors, commonly known as GaN chips. According to the company, the chips are used in smart phones, RF wireless infrastructure, electric vehicles, power grids and other areas. The popularity of electric vehicles, power grid upgrades and faster data transmission on 5G and 6G smartphones have created demand for the next generation of semiconductors, GE said.

"with this new federal funding and possible further support in the 2023 federal budget, GF is fully capable of becoming a global leader in gallium nitride chip manufacturing in Vermont," Dr. Thomas Caulfield, President and CEO of GlobalFoundries, said in a statement.
