CTOnews.com October 18 news, Susquehanna Financial Group report shows that September semiconductor delivery time shortened by 4 days, the biggest decline in many years, indicating that the industrial supply crisis is alleviating.

According to Susquehanna, the average lead time for semiconductors in September (the time gap between chip ordering and delivery) is 26.3 weeks. By comparison, the previous month was nearly 27 weeks.

Wait time is shrinking in all key product categories, with power management and analog chips falling the most, Susquehanna analyst Christopher Rolland said in a research note.

CTOnews.com has learned that global chip shortages have plagued a large number of industries over the past year, with carmakers and others struggling to get enough semiconductors. Some supply constraints still exist, but now many chipmakers are worried about the opposite: chip inventory is too high.

Slowing sales in some markets, such as personal computers, have led to lower-than-expected demand from Intel and advanced micro-device companies. Earlier this month, AMD's third-quarter sales were more than $1 billion less than expected, and Intel is preparing to cut jobs in response to the economic downturn.

The Philadelphia stock exchange semiconductor index, an important benchmark for chip stocks, is down 44% this year.
