As a result of this effort, all previously certified DisplayPort 2.0 products, including those that support UHBR (ultra high bit rate)-- whether GPU, docking chip, monitor scalar chip, PHY repeater chip (such as retimer) or DP40 / DP80 cable (including passive and active and using full-size DisplayPort,Mini DisplayPort or USB Type-C interfaces)-- have passed the more stringent DisplayPort 2.1 specification certification.

Achieving a strong end-to-end user visual experience remains a top priority of VESA's DisplayPort specification, whether over native DisplayPort cables, through DisplayPort Alt mode (DisplayPort over USB Type-C connectors), or through USB4 link tunnels. As a result, DisplayPort 2.1strengthens consistency with the USB Type-C specification and the USB4 PHY specification to promote a common PHY that provides services to DisplayPort and USB4. In addition, DisplayPort 2.1adds a new DisplayPort bandwidth management feature that enables DisplayPort tunnels to coexist more effectively with other I / O data traffic over USB4 links. This efficiency improvement is based on mandatory support for VESA's Visual Lossless display Stream Compression (DSC) codec and VESA's panel playback function.

Display transmission through DisplayPort has a higher bit rate and proven DSC compressed visual quality, and even HDR content provides sufficient bandwidth for almost all practical applications. Features such as driving multiple monitors over a single cable or enabling multiple functions (such as video, power, and data transmission) on a single port no longer require any compromise on the choice of video format. The advanced features of the DisplayPort video interface benefit from the valuable contribution of our more than 300 member companies from the entire electronic ecosystem. "

DisplayPort 2.1also updated the DisplayPort cable specification to provide greater robustness and enhancements for full-size and Mini DisplayPort cable configurations to improve connectivity and longer cable length (more than 2 meters for DP40 cables and more than 1 meter for DP80 cables) without reducing UHBR. VESA-certified DP40 cables support up to UHBR10 link rate (10 Gbps), with four channels, providing maximum throughput of 40 Gbps, while VESA-certified DP80 cables support up to UHBR20 link rate (20 Gbps) with four channels, providing a maximum throughput of 80 Gbps.
