Multiple exposure is a technical method in photography that uses two or more independent exposures and then overlaps them to form a single photo. Because the parameters of each exposure are different, the final photo will produce a unique visual effect. To put it more colloquially, it means to take two or more photos and fold them into one.

When shooting multiple exposures, we often follow these two steps:

1. Think about the effect we want.

01, superposition algorithm in-machine multi-exposure shooting needs to be set in the menu, different models of phase opportunities are slightly different, but more or less the same. Take Canon SLR camera as an example, there are four calculation methods in the menu: addition, average, bright and dark.

Addition-choose this option, each single exposure of the photo will be superimposed together, simple and direct. Because the brightness of the photo will all be superimposed, eventually the picture will become brighter and brighter. In the early shooting, it can be properly underexposed.

Average-Select this option to automatically control the exposure of the background each time a single exposure photo is taken to obtain a standard exposure result. After the three pictures are superimposed, the average luminance value is taken to ensure that the exposure is normal or standard.

Bright-Select this option to retain the bright part of each photo during multiple exposures.

Dark-the function of this option is the opposite of the "bright" option, which preserves the dark part of each photo during multiple exposures.

02. Common shooting effects there are two common shooting effects of multiple exposure: overlap and residual shadow.

Overlap: is to superimpose a picture and another picture on the same picture, usually with a portrait as the outline, and then fill it with the contents of another picture, combining the virtual with the real. Usually, a portrait is taken with a telephoto as the background of the overlay. Then take another picture so that the theme appears in the outline of the character.

Residual shadow: similar to the split body, they are all multiple images of the same person in the same photo, but the effect is very different. The residual shadow can create hazy beauty, or show the dynamic beauty of movement. In the shooting speed is slow, there is a shadow, after the superposition will appear this effect.

When shooting with multiple exposures, you can combine the camera's flash, continuous shooting and other functions to shoot the subject in motion and get interesting photos.

Some tutorials also put forward the method of "split body". There are two or more people in the same photo, similar to this kind of photo.

In fact, this is a bit fake, such a picture can not be taken with multiple exposures. We can see that the character completely covers the background in the photo. In multiple exposures, no matter which algorithm is chosen, it is impossible for the characters in this environment to completely cover the background. This kind of picture needs to be synthesized with the help of PS mask. If you do not use ps, directly use multi-exposure "addition" or "average" shooting, the characters and backgrounds will be intertwined.
