CTOnews.com, October 17 (Xinhua)-- Ian, one of the strongest hurricanes in US history, has swept through Florida, killing at least 131people and causing tens of billions of dollars in economic losses there. Not only that, the hurricane also caused a large number of electric cars to catch fire.

In a letter sent to Florida officials on October 14, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said it had received reports of several fires in Tesla's vehicles. A Florida senator called on the Department of Transportation and automakers to take action.

On Twitter, Jimmy Patronis, director of the Florida Fire Department and chief financial officer, shared a video of firefighters fighting electric car fires. He said that when the battery comes into contact with salty sea water, it will be corroded, causing a fire and difficult to put out.

Patronis urged residents of electric cars in their garages that could still be exposed to salt water to drag them into the driveway so that if the car caught fire, it would not burn down their houses.

It is worth mentioning that there have been a number of electric car batteries caught fire in the sea water before. After flooding in the Italian port of Savona in 2018, a large number of Maserati cars caught fire after salt water came into contact with lithium batteries. In February, a freighter carrying 4000 luxury cars caught fire in the Atlantic Ocean, Reuters reported. The ship's lithium-ion batteries caused the fire, although it is not clear what caused them to be ignited.

CTOnews.com learned that electric car fires are difficult to put out and may require 10 times more water than fuel cars to put out.
