CTOnews.com, October 17 (Xinhua) according to CINNO Research's monthly monitoring data on mobile phone sales in China, the number of smartphone fingerprints in the Chinese market in the first half of 2022 was about 110 million, down 18.6% from the same period last year and 9.8% from the previous month. Among them, off-screen fingerprints accounted for 33% of smartphone fingerprints, down 4% from the same period last year, while the proportion of side fingerprints increased by 10% to 44%.

The overall smartphone sales in the first half of the year were 17% lower than the same period last year. The carrying rate of side fingerprints was 44%, up 10% from the same period last year and 1% from the previous year.

On the other hand, the total carrying capacity of off-screen fingerprint recognition on domestic smartphones is about 44.36 million, down 25% from the same period last year, and the average price per unit is also slowly falling quarter by quarter.

In the first half of 2022, the brand with the largest number of side fingerprints in Chinese-branded smartphones was vivo, accounting for 26%, so that nearly 60% of the phones sold by vivo were equipped with side fingerprints.

Secondly, with the help of models such as Glory X30 (5G) and Changkuo 30 Plus (5G), Glory has greatly increased the use of side fingerprint recognition, making it the second largest mobile phone brand with side fingerprints. More than 60% of its models sold in the first half of 2022 have been equipped with side fingerprints.

At the same time, Xiaomi is also the third largest mobile phone brand that uses side fingerprints, with 75% of its models sold in the first half of 2022, up 15% from a year earlier.

According to CINNO Research, off-screen fingerprints and side fingerprints are the two preferred options for smartphone fingerprint recognition. Off-screen fingerprints only support OLED, and the use of folding mobile phones is not good, so side fingerprint identification has become the preferred choice for LTPS and folding mobile phones. Due to the huge cost pressure of the key components upstream of the smartphone, the terminal manufacturers reduce the cost of the non-critical parts. Compared with off-screen fingerprints, side fingerprints not only have cost advantages, but also relatively save fuselage space, so they are favored. With the accelerated penetration of OLED smartphones, and the unlocking rate and speed of side fingerprints are better than those of off-screen fingerprints, the carrying capacity of side fingerprints of smart phones will further increase.
