CTOnews.com, Oct. 17 (Xinhua)-- A Samsung display executive said Friday that MicroLED panels will be more suitable for use in augmented reality (AR) devices than OLED display panels, according to TheElec.

According to reports, Samsung display Group leader Kim Min-woo said at a MicroLED display seminar in Seoul that this is because AR devices require high brightness, which will require the development of new light-emitting diodes, which OLED cannot achieve. Compared with LED, the brightness level of OLED is traditionally lower.

Sources have previously revealed that Samsung is developing OLEDoS (silicon-based OLED) and LEDoS (silicon-based LED) display panels, with a long-term goal of developing LEDoS with a resolution of 6600 pixels per inch. CTOnews.com learned that OLEDoS (silicon-based OLED) and LEDoS (silicon-based LED) are display technologies that combine semiconductors with OLED or LED. Displays made with these technologies can achieve ultra-high resolution in small size, and have the advantages of high brightness, high contrast, high PPI, fast response and low power consumption, so they are suitable for AR/VR devices.

At the event, Kim also said that AR, virtual reality and hybrid reality all have different specific needs. AR needs more brightness than VR because it interacts with the real world. This also means that it needs to be lighter and the panel is relatively small.

Kim said the AR display requires at least 5000ppi, the pixel spacing must be 5 microns or less, and the red, green and blue sub-pixels must be 3 microns or less. He added that LED chips must also be 10 microns or less.

According to the data, Micro LED display technology refers to the display technology which takes the self-luminous micron LED as the luminous pixel unit and assembles it into the driver panel to form a high-density LED array. Because of its small size, high integration and self-illumination, micro LED has more advantages than LCD and OLED in brightness, resolution, contrast, energy consumption, service life, response speed and thermal stability.
