CTOnews.com, October 17, Linus Torvalds has started the development cycle of the upcoming Linux 6.1 kernel series and today announced the first candidate release (RC) to support public testing.

With the release of Linux Kernel 6.0on October 2nd, the two-week merge window is now closed, and it's time to try out the next important version of Linux Kernel 6.1 ahead of time.

The first candidate version of Linux kernel 6.1 (RC) is now available and ready for testers, early adopters, and early adopters, with a final release expected in early or mid-December 2022.

CTOnews.com has learned that the biggest new feature of Linux 6.1 will be to merge Rust infrastructure code. However, only basic support for the Rust programming language has been implemented, and it cannot be used for real-world use cases.

Another important content is the series of multi-generation LRU virtual machines. According to Linus Torvalds, a large version of Linux kernel 6.1 is being developed, which means it may have eight candidate versions, with the final version expected in mid-December.

As mentioned earlier, the final version of Linux kernel 6.1 should be released in December, either December 4 or December 11, depending on how many candidate releases (RC) have been announced before.

Since this will be the last major Linux kernel release this year, it should also be the next LTS (long-term support) series, according to kernel developer Greg Kroah-Hartman.

Users can now download the first candidate version (RC1) from the kernel.org website. However, it is not recommended to install or use it on production equipment.
