CTOnews.com October 16, Intel released XeSS 1.0 SDK last month to showcase Arc Graphics's unique Xe Super Sampling technology.

Unfortunately, the original SDK included Windows binaries and was not entirely open source. Yesterday, Intel launched an update of XeSS 1.0.1, added a Chinese development guide and fixed some Bug, but it is still not completely open source.

Intel claims that XeSS is "open source", but in fact Xe Super Sampling is not completely open source so far. But at least the header files and documentation are public, allowing game developers to integrate XeSS into various game engines as they like, but unfortunately it still relies on some Windows dll and exe.

In the XeSS 1.0.1 SDK released yesterday, there is a "bug fix" compared to version 1.0 released in September.

According to reports, XeSS is Intel's supersampling solution, which aims to make better use of GPU. Specifically, XeSS will render the game at a lower resolution, and then use AI technology to raise the image to a higher resolution, which is similar to or better than the original rendering effect. Finally, XeSS will output the high-resolution picture to the screen.

Intel pointed out that XeSS has four preset modes for players to choose from, namely, super quality, quality, balance, and performance. According to the results of the UL benchmark, the frame rate of performance mode is 2.5 times that of the original image quality, the frame rate of balanced mode is 2.1times that of the original picture quality, the frame rate of the quality mode is 1.8times that of the original picture quality, and the frame rate of the super quality mode is 1.5 times that of the original picture quality.

At the same time, Intel showed the actual demonstration effect. In two PC with Arc A770 graphics cards, run Tomb Raider: shadow with 1440p Max with ray tracing enabled, one of which turns on the balanced mode XeSS and the other does not enable the XeSS function. The results show that the PC with balanced mode XeSS can keep the game frame rate up to 60-80 FPS, while the PC without XeSS function is difficult to reach 60 frames, which is basically maintained at about 40 frames.

Intel also unveiled more than 20 games that support XeSS, including call of Duty: modern Warfare II, Tomb Raider: shadow, endless robbery, Killer 3, and death stranded.

CTOnews.com learned that XeSS technology uses the XMX engine in Xe GPU to achieve matrix acceleration to maximize rendering efficiency. Compared with traditional TAA, XeSS technology can bring higher frame rate and smoother game screen.
