CTOnews.com, Oct. 16 (Xinhua)-- Apple has developed a new dock accessory for the iPad that allows devices to be turned into smart home displays, similar to Google's Pixel tablet, the report said.

At its last event, Google announced that it would provide a rechargeable speaker dock, magnetically attached to the back of the upcoming Pixel tablet, basically turning it into a smart home display like Nest Hub and Nest Hub Max. Gurman said today that he expects Apple to bring similar features to the iPad through separate dock accessories in 2023, while the company will develop separate products for families that combine displays and smart speakers.

Gurman wrote in his latest Power On newsletter:

I was told that Apple is working on bringing similar features to the iPad, as soon as 2023. I reported last year that Apple is exploring a stand-alone device that combines the iPad with the speaker Hub. The idea is to provide some equipment that users can put on the kitchen counter, living room or nightstand. But Apple is also working on iPad pedestal accessories that can be sold separately, and it will do most of the same thing. "

CTOnews.com learned that iPad dock accessories allow users to use iPad to control different functions at home through the Home app, use iPad's front camera and middle portrait to make FaceTime calls, and so on.

Compared with Google and Amazon, Apple has kept a low profile on smart home products, releasing the HomePod mini only in October 2020, and then discontinuing production of the original HomePod in March 2021. Apple is also expected to release a new full-size HomePod in 2023. According to rumors, the new full-size HomePod will maintain the same design as the original smart speakers, but with faster performance and possibly a new display.
