CTOnews.com As particulate pollution is a major problem in large urban centers, Audi is working on a solution that will allow its future cars to clean the air around them both while driving and charging. To achieve this goal, Audi has sought help from one of its suppliers, Mann + Hummel, a leader in the filtration industry, and the system is currently performing very well in tests.

Audi launched a pilot project in 2020 to test the technology in the real world, which will continue until 2024. According to Fabian Groh, project manager of Audi's accessory systems development department, the system could even become mandatory for new cars at some point.

CTOnews.com understands that vehicles equipped with the system will filter particles from the air in two different ways, passively filtering while the vehicle is moving and actively filtering while charging. Since these filters are placed at the front of the vehicle, air flows naturally into the air intake as it moves, so it does not have to be sucked in by auxiliary means.

However, when the vehicle is stationary, the filtration system uses a fan to draw air in and force it through the filter, much like a home air purifier. Audi pointed out that the vehicle only cleans the air when charging, not every time it stops, otherwise the fan may drain the battery.

Audi says the system has passed a 50,000-kilometer durability test and found that it does not affect the operation of the vehicle in any way. Audi says the system is so effective that it can filter even more particles than the vehicle itself, in other words, particles produced by other vehicles.
