CTOnews.com, Oct. 15 (Xinhua)-- researchers at Pennsylvania State University recently unveiled a new battery technology that could cut the charging time of electric cars in half. The technology can also reduce the size of the battery and improve the battery life of electric vehicles.

The researchers' research, published earlier this week in the journal Nature, is a new technology developed in partnership with university-backed startup EC Power, an internal thermal regulation system for electric car batteries. According to the school, an ultra-thin nickel foil is added to the structure of the battery to help adjust the temperature so that the battery achieves the best performance without overheating and requiring a huge heating and cooling system. This not only reduces the battery charging time to 10 minutes, but also reduces the battery size by 2/3.

Long charging time is currently regarded as one of the main disadvantages of electric vehicles. In Deloitte's 2022 global automotive survey, 1/10 of people think this is their main problem driving electric cars.

According to Pennsylvania State University, EC Power is currently trying to build and commercialize the new battery. CTOnews.com learned that Li Shufu, chairman of Geely Holdings Group, had previously said that the electrification of the first half of the automobile industry has been basically completed and has entered the intelligent stage of the second half. As one of the most important core components of new energy vehicles, power batteries are gradually achieving efficient and intelligent management. At the same time, "Geely is developing a battery pack that can support users' longer mileage needs, and the fast charging time can be reduced to 15 minutes, which can greatly reduce user anxiety."
