CTOnews.com news on October 14, what keyboard layout do you like to use? Is it 9 or 26, or is it radical? to write? Double spell? Five inputs?

Ars Technica found that with the advent of the iOS 16 system, users have been able to choose touch-optimized keyboards in the system layout and natively support the 86-year-old Dvorak keyboard layout, including more traditional QWERTY, AZERTY and QWERTZ layouts.

CTOnews.com learned that the Dvorak Keyboard or Dvorak Simplified Keyboard, developed and designed by Auguste Dvorak and William Dilly in the 1930s, was an alternative to the mainstream keyboard arrangement of QWERTY layout, which was finally completed in 1932 and patented in the United States in 1936; and Apple and Dvorak actually have a long history. For example, the Apple IIc is the world's first computer with an Dvorak keyboard.

The advantage of this design is that it is fast in typing and conforms to the physiological structure of the human body. it takes letter frequency as the main consideration and allows two-handed interactive input, but the problem is that this layout is designed for English and is not friendly to users in other languages.

For English users, the main benefit of Dvorak is that it can evenly distribute the workload between all fingers when touching and typing. It places all vowels on the left side of the main line of the keyboard, all the most commonly used consonants on the right, making them faster and easier to press, and then other less commonly used characters are placed at the edge of the screen.

At present, the fastest English typing speed in the world is still created on the Dvorak keyboard. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, Barbara Blackburn is currently the fastest typist in the world. In 1985, she typed on the Dvorak keyboard for 50 minutes, averaging 150 words per minute, with a peak speed of 212 words per minute.

Interestingly, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak ("Woz") is a veteran fan of this keyboard layout. He never went back after learning Dvorak around 1993 (he said he was not involved in the development of Dvorak Apple IIc).

In an email to Ars Technica, Woz described how he first learned Dvorak. " I practiced typing on the plane to Tokyo. I spent five hours learning it, and I never saw the QWERTY keyboard again. It's that simple. My son has successfully learned, and learned Dvorak in a very short time, and quickly reached the speed at which he typed on QWERTY in about a week. "

It is worth noting that Dvorak prides itself on its speed because users can type with 10 fingers at the same time, so if you are a beginner of Dvorak, you may not feel any advantage when typing with two fingers on your phone.

"what I liked most about Dvorak at the time was the feeling of saving energy on my fingers," says Woz. "since the advent of iPhone, I have had to use the QWERTY keyboard, but it can no longer get my heart. I am a very fast QWERTY typist, but now I have to look at the letters on the iPhone."
