Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com, October 14 (Xinhua)-- the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory of the U.S. Department of Energy has released the world's largest digital camera. This astronomical digital camera is 1.65 meters high and has a resolution of 3.2 billion pixels.
At the SLAC National Accelerator Lab, technicians are working on the world's largest digital camera. The camera will be shipped to Chile and installed on a telescope in the Andes, and over the next 10 years it will participate in the Space-time Heritage Survey (LSST) to build an astronomical treasure trove of images of about 20 billion galaxies. Although the camera is not finished yet, all its mechanical parts have been assembled in one frame for the first time.
CTOnews.com learned that the LSST camera is a digital camera that works similar to other digital cameras, but much larger. With the help of its 189 sensors, it can capture light from stars and other objects and convert it into electrical signals. Each sensor is about 16 millimeters in size, and the camera has a total of 3.2 billion pixels and can capture dust particles from the moon. Its largest lens diameter is 1.57 meters, which is the largest of its kind in history.
Vincent Riot, project manager of LSST camera, said the camera's sensors are so expensive to make that any misalignment can easily damage them.
The camera will have its last upgrade this year: a modern cooling system will be installed. The camera will then be completed and ready for final testing and then shipped to Chile in May 2023.
The large Integrated Survey Telescope (LSST) is an astronomical observatory currently under construction in Chile. Its main task is to conduct a synchronous astronomical survey, also known as the "space-time heritage survey". The observatory is located on the El Pe ó n peak of Mount Cerro Pach ó n, 2682 m above sea level in the Cojimbo region of northern Chile, alongside the existing Gemini Southern Telescope and Southern Astrophysical Research Telescope.
