Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com, Oct. 14 (Xinhua)-- this week Meta launched the Meta Quest Pro, a new virtual reality head display that costs as much as $1500 (about 10755 yuan) with upgraded hardware and advanced features, as well as a camera pointing inside to track users' eyes.
Gizmodo found that Meta has updated its privacy policy by adding an entry called "Eye tracking Privacy Notification," which has several paragraphs describing what data has been collected. If you agree to share additional data, Meta will use eye tracking and other data points "to help Meta personalize your experience and improve Meta Quest," the company said. The policy does not literally say that data will be used for advertising, but "personalize your experience" is a typical privacy policy term that refers to personalized targeted advertising.
Not only that, Nick Clegg, head of global affairs at Meta, said bluntly in an interview with the Financial Times that eye-tracking data could be used to "know whether people are attracted to advertising".
Ray Walsh, a digital privacy researcher at ProPrivacy, said: "when you can see a person looking at an advertisement for a watch, scanning for ten seconds, smiling and thinking about whether they can afford it, it provides more information than ever before."
Meta has developed a large number of technologies for these purposes. The company patented a system that "adjusts media content" to facial expressions as early as January and has been trying to exploit and manipulate people's emotions for more than a decade. In January, the company applied for a patent for a robotic eyeball.
At present, there is no advertising in Meta's Horizon Worlds, and advertising intrusion seems inevitable given that Meta's two-dimensional business model is so dependent on advertising.
CTOnews.com learned that Meta turned off Facebook's facial recognition function last year and deleted about 1 billion facial data, but the company never promised to stop using facial recognition data altogether.
