CTOnews.com The launch of the new Porsche Macan electric SUV has been delayed for a year because software development has been slower than expected within the Volkswagen Group.

The Macan electric car will be one of the first production cars to use Porsche and Audi's PPE pure electric platform, and Porsche has now confirmed that the launch of the car will be delayed until 2024. Issues surrounding the E3 1.2 software platform of Volkswagen Group's software division Cariad were one of the reasons for the delay.

Porsche confirmed the news in its IPO prospectus last month, warning in the prospectus that the delay could also delay the launch schedule "especially for the 718 (Porsche Boxster and Porsche Cayman) and Porsche Cayenne BEV models." However, the exact timetable for these vehicles has not been given.

Porsche also warned in its prospectus that Cariad's simultaneous development of a separate software stack for E3 2.0 meant it "may allocate more development capacity and resources to E3 2.0 at the expense of further development of the E3 1.2 platform."

Porsche has said in the past that it is not bound by the Volkswagen Group's future platform strategy, specifically the Scalable System Platform (SSP) for electric vehicles, which will eventually replace PPE. Porsche said it will lead the development of a performance version of the platform called SSP Sport, which will be used in the next-generation Panamera and Taycan, as well as an unnamed "new all-electric luxury SUV model."

Porsche has said it expects more than 50 percent of cars delivered in 2025 to be electrified, rising to 80 percent all-electric by 2030. Electric cars (all Taycans) accounted for 14% of Porsche sales last year, while plug-in hybrids accounted for 11%.

Porsche said the Macan electric car will use a similar 800V electrical architecture to the Taycan and improve its endurance. CTOnews.com understands Porsche has begun testing the SUV in May 2021 and will build it at its Leipzig plant, where the gasoline version of the Macan is produced.
