CTOnews.com, October 13 (Xinhua) the James Webb Telescope captured an unusual dust pattern around two stars, similar to the rings inside the tree trunk.

The image, released by the European Space Agency and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), shows that the dust consists of 17 concentric rings of dust particles around two stars called Wolf-Rayet 140.

According to JPL, Wolf-Rayet stars are very rare in the Milky way, and only 600 have been found so far. Wolf-Rayet 140 is the only system found to have such a ring of dust, and its orbit shape is "slender". These rings come from the reaction of two stars as they approach, and every eight years, a "fingerprint" is formed around the star.

The European Space Agency explained: "when two stars are close together and their winds (streams of gas blowing into space) meet, they produce a ring that compresses the gas and forms dust. The orbit of the stars causes them to meet about every eight years, like tree trunk rings, dust rings mark the passage of time."

In addition, this picture also shows the power of the James Webber Telescope. Previously, scientists could only see two dust rings around Wolf Rayet 140 using ground-based telescopes.
