BMW says there are about 20 million connected cars on the road as of today. AWS software will be integrated into BMW's "Neue Klasse" pure electric platform for its future electric vehicles.

Nicolai Kr ä mer, vice president of the BMW Group's vehicle connection platform, said in a statement that the new platform can handle about three times the amount of vehicle data compared to the current generation of BMW models.

Today's intelligent vehicles rely more on software than ever before to provide support for remote information processing, navigation and advanced driver assistance functions. Automakers are also increasingly reaching licensing agreements with Silicon Valley software giants to better manage the data generated by vehicles.

Amazon said it was in talks with other automakers to use the AWS cloud platform as an easy-to-use tool for collecting vehicle data, managing large fleets and improving maintenance and repair processes. The platform also enables automakers to provide "advanced vehicle features and a more personalized driver experience" at a lower cost.
