Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--

CTOnews.com, October 13, Microsoft said that Sony had previously refused to "launch" Xbox Game Pass subscriptions on the PlayStation platform. The ongoing Microsoft acquisition of Activision Blizzard has intensified the conflict between the two companies because Sony PlayStation believes the call of Duty on Xbox Game Pass will prove to be anti-competitive. 'The situation is more complicated than it looks, 'Microsoft said in a response provided through the UK Competition and Market Authority.

As Tom Warre shared on Twitter, Microsoft is responding to PlayStation's argument that the acquisition of the call of Duty franchise will be "beneficial" to Xbox subscriptions. In other words, offering call of Duty through Xbox Game Pass rather than other subscription services would be anti-competitive and irrevocably undermine Sony's own efforts. Microsoft has several arguments against Sony's view, many of which revolve around Sony's own game subscription service.

First, Microsoft hinted that it was trying to provide Xbox Game Pass on PlayStation. Presumably, this will make it clear that Microsoft is not trying to limit the exclusive availability of call of Duty to any hardware platform through subscription purchases. If Sony says exclusivity will damage its consoles, Microsoft says it is more than willing to bring Xbox Game Pass to each other's platform, and PlayStation players can get call of Duty games in this way. However, Sony blocked the landing of Xbox Game Pass on PlayStation.

Microsoft also believes that Sony has exaggerated its investment in game subscription services. Microsoft said Sony's own priority was to "protect its revenue from newly released game sales", which has proved successful given its market leadership. Microsoft says Sony can increase the competitiveness of its PlayStation Plus subscription service by offering a variety of games it doesn't currently have. But the previous choice not to do so shows Sony's previous lack of interest in competing in this market.

CTOnews.com learned that while Microsoft tried to weaken Sony's argument from several angles, it contained a tone that really went to the heart of the problem. That is, Sony's primary goal is not to be fair, nor is it concerned about whether Microsoft has become anti-competitive. Instead, Sony believes that slowing down or blocking Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard is obviously good for PlayStation.

It is not clear whether PlayStation's opposition will have any significant impact on Microsoft. Activision Blizzard's $69 billion acquisition is being closely watched in both the European Union and the UK, which is also necessary. However, even without further obstacles, Microsoft is likely to complete the acquisition much later than expected.
