October 12, according to foreign media reports, automaker Stellantis announced that it had signed a preliminary non-binding agreement with Australian miner GME Resources to obtain raw materials such as nickel and cobalt sulfate for electric vehicle battery production from GME Resources.

Stellantis is formed by the merger of Fiat Chrysler (FCA) and Peugeot Citroen (PSA), with FCA and PSA each holding 50 per cent of the combined company.

Stellantis aims to sell all its passenger cars in Europe and 50 per cent of its passenger cars and light trucks in the US by 2030. The company plans to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2038 and reduce carbon emissions by 50% from 2021 levels by 2030.

Foreign media said that the company obtained raw materials nickel and cobalt sulfate from GME Resources in order to achieve the above goals. The raw materials will come from NiWest, a nickel-cobalt advanced mining project currently being developed by GME Resources in western Australia, which plans to produce about 90,000 tons of battery-grade nickel and cobalt sulfate per year.

In addition to GME Resources, Stellantis has reached an important agreement with lithium producer Vulcan Energy to ensure the supply of lithium.

In June, the two companies announced that Stellantis had made a 50 million euro equity investment in Vulcan and extended a binding supply agreement signed by the two sides to 10 years.
