01. The entrance hole determines the shape of the light spot. First of all, we need to know that after entering the lens, the light is virtual, forming a light spot. The shape of the light hole in the lens determines the shape of the light spot, and the light hole is usually close to a circle, so the light spot is also round. Even if it is a not-so-round polygon, the edges are blurred and close to a circle.

02. Change the shape of the light hole with a paper jam We prepare an opaque piece of paper, draw the shape we want on it, and then fix it in front of the lens (if it is pasted, stick it on the UV mirror to prevent damage to the lens), so as to change the shape manually. You can draw hearts, five-pointed stars, Christmas trees, doves of peace, roses, etc., and shoot light spots of various shapes.

03. Pay attention to the size of the light hole. If you want to change the shape of the light hole, the pattern we draw must be smaller than that of the lens, otherwise it will lose its function, as shown in the following picture.

How do you know the diameter of the light hole in the lens? remember a formula:

Focal length / aperture = entrance hole diameter (in millimeters)

Suppose I have a zoom lens with a focal length of 18-200mm. The maximum aperture of the 18mm is F3.5, so the diameter of the entry hole is 5.1mm. The maximum aperture of the 200mm is F6.3, so the incoming diameter is 31 mm.

04. Telephoto + large aperture when shooting, priority is given to the use of telephoto and large aperture. Long focus can bring a stronger virtual effect, easy to produce light spots. According to the results of the above calculation, many lenses can draw larger patterns when they are in telephoto. For example, they can only draw a ball of half a centimeter in 18mm and a pattern of 3 centimeters in 200mm.

05. The subject is near and the background is far. If only the light spot is taken, the photo will look a little monotonous, and it would be better to add a subject. The subject can be a character or a knickknack. When shooting, let the subject closer to the camera, the background away from the main body, so that a better spot effect can be achieved.
