Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
Oct. 12 (Xinhua) A study released by the American Highway Safety Insurance Association (IIHS) on Tuesday found that American drivers who use advanced auxiliary driving systems such as Tesla Autopilot or GM Super Cruise often ignore warnings and regard their vehicles as fully self-driving.
IIHS is an industry-funded organization that urges automakers to produce safer cars. A survey released by the association on Tuesday found that ordinary users of GM Super Cruise, Nissan ProPILOT Assist and Tesla Autopilot "all said that when they use the assisted driving system, they are more likely to engage in activities that have nothing to do with driving, such as eating or texting, than when they drive independently."
A survey of 600 active users of the advanced assisted driving system conducted by IIHS found that 53 per cent of Super Cruise users, 42 per cent of Autopilot users and 12 per cent of ProPILOT Assist users "said they could safely see their vehicles as fully self-driving".
Both Tesla Autopilot and GM Super Cruise have the function of preventing drivers from being inattentive and actively shutting down the system. About 40 per cent of Autopilot users and Super Cruise users reported that they had shut down the system at some point and stopped rebooting while driving.
"the overall message of the report is that early adopters of these systems still know little about the limitations of the technology," said David Harkey, chairman of IIHS.
The study comes as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) examines accidents involving autopilot systems.
Since 2016, NHTSA has launched 37 special investigations, in which 18 people were killed in accidents related to Tesla's electric car or Autopilot.
Tesla didn't respond to a request for comment. Tesla said that Autopilot does not allow vehicles to drive on their own, and drivers need to keep their attention and be ready to take over the vehicle at all times.
GM said, "for any advanced driver assistance system that is available on GM, the participation of drivers is crucial."
In August, GM said owners would be able to use Super Cruise on 400,000 miles (643740 kilometers) of roads across North America, and plans to offer Super Cruise as an advanced driving aid on its 22 models by the end of 2023.
IIHS said the main focus of the Super Cruise ad was the function of the so-called hands-free driving system (Hands-Free Driving System), which allows drivers to release their hands from the steering wheel on certain sections such as highways. The name of Tesla Autopilot is easily reminiscent of the autopilot system used on the airliner, "implying that Tesla's system is more powerful than it actually is."
By contrast, according to IIHS, the Nissan ProPILOT Assist "shows that it is an auxiliary function, not a substitute for drivers."
Both NHTSA and carmakers say these systems do not allow vehicles to drive on their own.
Nissan said the name ProPILOT Assist "makes it clear that it is just an auxiliary driving system that needs to be operated manually. Drivers should always maintain control of the vehicle."
