Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com, Oct. 11 (Xinhua)-- the Indian government will push Apple, Samsung and other handset makers to give priority to system upgrades to support the country's 5G network, Reuters reported.
CTOnews.com learned that India officially launched the country's 5G service on October 1 local time. The country's telecom operator Reliance Jio will offer the service in four cities and competitor Bharti Airtel in eight cities. Both companies say the service will be expanded next year.
But according to three industry insiders and Airtel's website, Apple's iPhone models, including the latest iPhone 14, and many Samsung flagship phones currently do not support India's 5G network.
Senior bureaucrats in India's telecoms and IT departments are worried about this and will host a meeting on Wednesday that will require smartphone executives from foreign companies Apple, Samsung, vivo and Xiaomi, as well as domestic telecom operators Reliance, Airtel and Vodafone Idea, to attend, according to a government document seen by Reuters. The closed-door meeting notice said the agenda included talks, "priorities" and the release of system upgrades to support high-speed 5G networks.
India said the launch of 5G in the world's largest mobile market after China would bring high-speed Internet to consumers as well as social and economic benefits in areas such as agriculture and health.
Although telecom companies and smartphone companies have been discussing with each other, it will take time to resolve compatibility issues between India Telecom's specific 5G technology and mobile software, according to industry insiders.
In its 5G compatibility section, Apple's iPhone 12 to 14 models show that "Apple has not yet updated their software," and many Samsung models do not support it, while more than 30 models of China's Xiaomi and vivo show that they can use their 5G services, according to Airtel's website on Tuesday. Sources say Apple is testing and verifying different 5G products offered by Indian network providers.
