Beijing, Oct. 11 (Xinhua)-- an official of the Australian Union of Retail and Fast Food Workers (RAFFWU) said on Tuesday that they voted to go on strike because of the lack of progress in wage negotiations. RAFFWU represents Apple employees in Australia.

RAFFWU, Apple's Australian retail store, said it planned to hold an one-hour strike on October 18 to disrupt Apple's retail store operations in Australia and increase industrial relations pressure on the company elsewhere. The strike, which represents 4000 Apple employees in Australia, will limit most customer service at at least three of RAFFWU's 22 Australian stores.

According to RAFFWU, the strike will be Apple's first strike in Australia and will expand the scope of collective bargaining that Apple faces around the world. They want apple to ensure that wage growth reflects inflation (Australia's inflation rate is around 7%, twice the central bank's target range) and two weekends in a row, rather than separate.

"We have concluded our negotiations today, but we are still unable to reach a satisfactory agreement, and last night members unanimously supported (if no agreement is reached) to take this measure." "when a large number of workers leave, there will be an impact," Josh Cullinan, federal secretary of the RAFFWU, said in an interview.

Apple responded that its minimum wage was 17 per cent higher than the industry minimum wage and that full-time employees were guaranteed weekends. "We are committed to providing our employees with the best experience, including very generous pay and benefits, annual stock awards and a comprehensive vacation policy, all of which exceed Australian industry standards."
