Thanks to CTOnews.com netizens Wu Yanzu and OC_Formula for the clue delivery! CTOnews.com, October 11 (Xinhua)-- according to Android Authority, the new Tensor G2 processors in Google's Pixel 7 series are still manufactured through a 5-nm manufacturing process manufactured by Samsung, while the most advanced processors in the industry are generally manufactured using 4-nm processes from Samsung and TSMC.

There are rumors that the Tensor G2 is made using Samsung's 4nm process, but this information is wrong. A Google spokesman's response to Android Authority confirmed that the processor was made using Samsung 5nm technology:

We have created Google Tensor G2 specifically for real-world use cases. Our final architecture, including 5 nanometers, helps us achieve this goal while improving performance and power efficiency. This approach also enables us to add new features and is a step forward with our next generation of TPU and G2 in machine learning.

So Google confirmed that the Tensor G2 is a 5nm chip. Google did not disclose the contract manufacturer, but not surprisingly, it is Samsung, which is Google's main partner. In addition, according to Samsung's roadmap, it has two 5-nanometer nodes: the 5LPE process used in the original Tensor chip, and a newer 5LPP. However, it is not clear which process Tensor G2 uses.

CTOnews.com learned that even without confirmation from Google, there is some information that the Tensor G2 processor is using a 5-nanometer process. First of all, the processor does not significantly improve the clock speed. The Arm Cortex-X1 kernel in Tensor G2 runs on 2.85GHz, which is only 50MHz higher than the original Tensor 2.80GHz. In addition, Google itself did not mention the chip manufacturing process anywhere in its Pixel 7 or Tensor press release, implying that it was using the same process as the previous generation.
