It has been 10 years since the dark energy camera first saw the stars, and the impressive 570 megapixel camera was originally built for the dark energy survey at Fermi Accelerator Lab. Dark energy cameras have taken more than a million pictures of the southern sky from the tops of the Chilean Andes. These images contain about 2.5 billion astronomical objects. Here are some of the many photos taken with dark energy cameras.

South windmill galaxy

The Southwind Galaxy (also known as Messier 83 or NGC 5236) is about 1500 light-years from Earth, and the dark energy camera took more than 11 hours of exposure to take this image.

Dark energy deep field

The dark energy survey imaged 1/8 of the sky, capturing light from galaxies 8 billion light-years away. The survey repeated 10 "deep fields", as shown here.

Comet Lovejoy

In 2014, the Dark Energy Survey found that Comet Lovejoy was about 5100 miles from Earth. Each rectangle in the image represents one of the 62 CCD used by the dark energy camera, and each CCD is a complex sensor designed to capture light from distant galaxies.

"Spanish dancers"

The spiral galaxy NGC 1566, sometimes called the "Spanish dancer", is about 6900 light-years from Earth. Dark energy cameras use five filters to record light at different wavelengths (between 400 and 1080 nanometers).

Galactic center

It covers an area about twice the size of the full moon and contains more than 180000 stars.

Straw hat galaxy

From our position on Earth, we can see the spiral galaxy NGC 681from the side. This galaxy, also known as the straw hat galaxy, is about 6650 light-years away.

Small Magellanic Nebula

The large Magellanic Nebula and the small Magellanic Nebula are dwarf satellite galaxies in the Milky way, and their distance makes them valuable places to study star formation.
