CTOnews.com, Oct. 9-earlier this year, Apple introduced a feature that allows participating U.S. state residents to add their driver's license or state ID to their iPhone and Apple Watch wallet apps, providing a convenient, contactless way to show identity or age proof.

Which states in the United States support this feature so far?

Arizona (as of March 2022)

Maryland (as of May 2022)

Which states in the United States will support this feature?

In March, Apple said another 10 states listed below would "soon" allow residents to add their driver's license or state ID to the wallet app, but it was unclear when each state planned to introduce support for the feature.

Colorado

connecticut

Georgia

State of Hawaii

Iowa

Kentucky

Mississippi

Ohio

Oklahoma

Utah

Apple says the feature will also be supported in Puerto Rico.

Last year, Apple executive Jennifer Bailey said the company was "already in discussions with more states" and tried to provide the feature to the nation in the future. Apple has not announced any plans to extend the feature to other countries.

Please note that some states, such as Florida and Louisiana, offer iPhone driving licenses through their own apps, separate from Apple's wallet app.

Where can I use identification in the wallet application?

Driver's licenses and state ID cards stored in the wallet app can now be used at specific TSA checkpoints at three airports in the United States.

Baltimore / Washington Thurgood-Marshall International Airport (BWI)

Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA)

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX)

Apple said passengers should refer to the logo at the TSA checkpoint to confirm the availability of the feature.

Starting with iOS 16, users will be able to show their ID ID stored in the wallet application in supported iPhone applications that require identity or age verification. Apple shows examples of Uber Eats and Turo, two applications that can provide this functionality.

Apple's website has previously said that ID cards in wallet apps can also be used in specific retailers and places in the future.

This function cannot replace the physical ID card in all cases. For example, Apple did not mention that ID cards in wallet apps will be accepted by law enforcement agencies or the government, so it is still necessary to carry physical IDs.

Which iPhone and Apple Watch models are supported?

This feature requires iPhone 8 or later running iOS version 15.4 or later. If used on Apple Watch, this feature requires an Apple Watch Series 4 or later model running watchOS 8.4 or later.

For security reasons, Face ID or Touch ID must be enabled on the iPhone, and the device's region must be set to the United States. You also need to open an Apple ID account with two-factor authentication.

How do I add a driver's license or ID card to my wallet app?

In participating states, users can simply click the "+" button in the upper-right corner of the wallet app and follow the on-screen instructions to add a driver's license or state ID to the iPhone and paired Apple Watch. The process involves scanning the front and back of a driver's license or ID card, confirming the user's identity by taking facial photos, and completing a series of facial and head movements.

CTOnews.com learned that users can only add one license or ID card to one iPhone and one paired Apple Watch at a time.

How do I use identity documents stored in the wallet application?

To show the ID stored in the wallet application at the participating TSA checkpoint, simply click iPhone or Apple Watch on the identifier. The prompts on the device will display specific information required by TSA, such as the user's name and date of birth, which will only be displayed after authentication using Face ID or Touch ID. When the user successfully presents his license or ID card, a check mark appears on the screen.

According to Apple, users do not need to unlock, display or hand over the device to TSA officials to show their ID cards in the wallet app.

Is this feature secure?

Apple says identity data is encrypted and neither Apple nor the national license agency can see when and where users use their licenses or ID cards in their wallet apps. If the user's device is locked when showing his ID card, it will remain locked after that.
