Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com, October 9 (Xinhua)-- it has been revealed that Apple will develop its own 5G baseband chip for the future iPhone, but Qualcomm is expected to remain the modem supplier for all iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 series models, indicating that Apple's baseband chip will not be unveiled until at least 2025.
Jeff Pu, an analyst at Haitong International Securities, said in a research note on Friday that he expects the iPhone model (temporarily known as the iPhone 16 series) to be released in 2024 to use Qualcomm's unannounced Snapdragon X75 modem. Like the Snapdragon X70, the X75 is expected to be manufactured based on TSMC's 4nm process to help improve energy efficiency.
In June, Tianfeng International analyst Guo Mingyi said that Qualcomm would continue to be the exclusive supplier of 5G modems for the new iPhone (temporarily known as iPhone 15 series) models in 2023 because Apple failed to complete the development of its own alternative chips. At the time, Mr Guo said he believed Apple would continue to develop its own 5G chip, but did not provide a time frame for when the chip would be used in the iPhone.
All four iPhone 15 series models are expected to be equipped with Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon X70 modem, which was released in February this year. Like the Snapdragon X65 modem in the iPhone 14 series models, the X70 theoretically supports download speeds up to 10Gbps, and the new artificial intelligence features increase average speed, improve coverage, improve signal quality, reduce latency, and improve energy efficiency by up to 60%.
All in all, although initial reports suggested that Apple's own 5G modem could be unveiled in iPhone as early as 2023, the final transition could take at least a few years.
CTOnews.com has learned that Apple has spent more than $1 billion on Intel's modem division, but it remains to be seen how much money it will take to use its own 5G baseband chip. Apple reached a patent lawsuit settlement with Qualcomm in 2019, and some analysts said that Apple's self-developed 5G baseband chip will not be held back by patents, but it still needs to obtain some standard essential patents + non-standard essential patent licenses of Qualcomm anyway.
