Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--

Thanks to CTOnews.com netizen OC_Formula for the clue delivery! CTOnews.com, Oct. 8 (Xinhua)-- Samsung has set a goal of applying transparent PI substrates to its foldable phones by 2024, replacing the current yellow PI substrates, with the ultimate goal of getting clearer pictures from off-screen cameras, according to South Korean media The Elec.

Samsung Galaxy Fold 4 off-screen camera reported that according to industry sources, Samsung display has set the goal of using transparent polyimide (PI) substrate for foldable mobile phones released around 2024, and currently mass-produced flexible organic light-emitting diodes (OLED) for foldable mobile phone applications use yellow PI substrate.

CTOnews.com learned that Samsung's plan to apply transparent PI substrates to flexible OLED is to improve the light transmittance of the off-screen camera (UPC). The lens aperture of the UPC is visible only when using the camera function and is structurally located below the OLED display. When using the camera function of UPC, the external light must pass through the flexible OLED.

The Samsung display reduced the pixel density of the UPC area to 187 PPI, half that of the remaining display area 374 PPI (pixels per inch), to make up for these shortcomings caused by the first application of UPC to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3. If the pixel density is low, you can increase the area where light can be received. However, the display pixel size of the UPC area is also increased to 4 times that of the remaining area, so there is a clear boundary between the UPC and the rest of the display.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 (left) and Z Fold 4 (right) off-screen camera comparison if Samsung displays use transparent PI substrates instead of yellow PI substrates as planned, the light transmittance of the UPC area will increase, allowing clearer pictures to be taken than they are now. Pixels could also be arranged more densely than they are now, and the boundaries with the rest of the display would be less obvious.

The report also said that the heat resistance and high cost of the transparent PI varnish needed to produce transparent PI substrates is a challenge. Samsung monitors initially wanted to use a transparent PI substrate on the Galaxy Z Fold 3 released last year, but the application time was delayed due to the nature of the transparent PI varnish. If Samsung displays successfully develop a transparent PI substrate, it is expected to be used in Samsung Electronics' collapsible phone OLED and then in Apple's iPhone.

LG Display is also developing transparent PI substrates for UPC applications according to its own technology roadmap. The iPhone flexible OLED panel provided by LG Display for Apple also uses a yellow PI substrate. According to the roadmap, LG Display plans to increase the light transmittance of UPC to 20 per cent by 2023 and 40 per cent after 2024.
