Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--

CTOnews.com, Oct. 7 (Xinhua)-- as robots made by Boston Dynamics and similar companies continue to expand their applications, concerns about their abuse are growing. In order to prevent the emergence of killer robots, some robot companies have issued an open letter promising not to weaponize robots and imploring users not to do the same.

CTOnews.com learned that last October, Ghost Robotics showed off a robotic dog with a sniper rifle on its back. Another video circulated on social media earlier this year shows a quadruped robot shooting at a target on a shooting range with an assault rifle on its back. The combination of robots and deadly weapons is disturbing.

Boston Dynamics, along with Agility Robotics, ANYbotics, Boston Dynamics, Clearpath Robotics, Open Robotics and Unitree Robotics, expressed their concerns about these possibilities today. In an open letter to the industry, the group pointed out that advanced commercial robots are becoming more affordable and accessible, and are more likely to be abused.

"untrusted people can use them to infringe civil rights or threaten, harm or intimidate others," the letter wrote. "one area of particular concern is weaponization. We believe that adding weapons to remote or autonomous robots, making them widely available to the public, and being able to navigate to previously inaccessible places where people live and work will bring new injury risks and serious moral problems."

In the letter, the group promised not to weaponize its robots or support others to do so, and called on policy makers and users to promote their safe use. The letter also proposes a plan to assess customers' intentions for their products and to work on technical solutions to reduce the risk of the weaponization of robots.

"We believe that the benefits of these technologies far outweigh the risk of abuse, and we are excited about the bright future of humans and robots working side by side to solve some of the world's challenges," the letter concluded.
