Beijing, Oct. 7 (Xinhua)-- e-commerce giant Amazon is abandoning its home delivery robot business, the latest sign that the company is scaling back its pilot projects as sales growth slows.
Amazon has stopped developing the automated robot Scout, which was launched about three years ago, according to a person familiar with Amazon's delivery robot Scout. Amazon has about 400 people working on the project around the world.
Amazon spokeswoman Alisa Carroll said the Scout team will be disbanded and the company will provide them with new jobs. " During Scout's limited field testing, we worked hard to create a unique delivery experience, but we learned through feedback that some aspects of the program did not meet customer needs. As a result, we ended the field test and reoriented the project. During this transitional period, we will work with our staff to provide them with vacancies that best suit their experience and skills. " Carol said.
Amazon began testing the cooler-sized robot on sidewalks outside Seattle in 2019, and then expanded the experiment to Southern California, Georgia and Tennessee. The slow-moving device, which is guarded during testing, stops in front of the customer's house and opens the lid so that the customer can pick up the package. Amazon says the battery-powered robots are part of its efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in its distribution business.
Just a few months ago, Amazon was holding a meeting in the community where the devices were tested. Sean Scott, Amazon's vice president in charge of robot development, left last year, according to LinkedIn.
Under the leadership of Andy Jassy, CEO, Amazon is adjusting to a slowdown in its core retail business, delaying some investments and halting others. The company is known for supporting radical experiments that could take years to bear fruit, including cashier-free stores, flying delivery drones and satellite constellations that promise Internet access around the world. Amazon will also stop selling the children's video calling device Amazon Glow, freeze hiring for corporate retail teams, and is gradually shutting down its telemedicine service, Amazon Care.
