Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--

CTOnews.com, Oct. 6, according to the open source Mesa3D RADV Radeon Vulkan driver team, they are working to improve AMD GPU's ray tracing performance.

CTOnews.com learned that Google's Bas Nieuwenhuizen, the co-founder of the RADV driver, released the source code on the first day of the X.Org developer conference, also known as XDC 2022, and demonstrated the ray-tracing performance of the Mesa Vulkan driver.

In the demo on XDC 2022, he explained the process of ray tracing, how to deal with the graphics acceleration of AMD Radeon RDNA 2 graphics cards, the challenges encountered by the team in the implementation process, and how to achieve software optimization for the old AMD GPU.

At present, the RADV driver is the first choice for Linux AMD graphics card users, this driver will be constantly updated and regularly improved to optimize all aspects of performance.

Unlike AMD's proprietary AMDVLK, it uses the RADV driver of the Mesa project, and each Linux distribution channel can clearly understand its changes.

RADV co-founders ensure that games compatible with ray tracing on RADV include "Control", "cycle of death", "Metro: departure enhanced", "Thor Hammer 2 RTX" and "biochemical crisis Village".

Another topic related to RADV is the performance comparison of AMDVLK ray tracing support and the performance comparison of AMDGPU-PRO proprietary drivers. RADV is still mediocre when using ray tracing, but developers are using experimental techniques to improve performance.

The AMD update AMDVLK code, as part of its official Linux update, is based on the same source code used in Windows and Linux proprietary Vulkan drivers. In addition, a major challenge for this driver is that there are still missing parts of the LLVM AMDGPU shader compiler used on proprietary shaders.

RADV support currently under development will include separate shader compilation and default ray tracing support, indirect BHV builds will also bring allow DirectX ray tracing (DXR 1.1) support, as well as further performance optimizations and enhancements.
