CTOnews.com, Oct. 6, Oct. 5, Apple App Store pricing increases in many countries and regions and all regions using euro currencies. In response, Tim Sweeney, chief executive of Epic Games, who is involved in a legal battle with Apple, said there was no reason for Apple to do so.

In a statement, Sweeney compared Apple to landlords because there was no alternative App Store for developers and tenants had nowhere to go.

Imagine if landlords tell their small business tenants that they have to raise prices and have no say or nowhere to go. That's what Apple does to developers, for no other reason, just to increase Apple's profits. They unilaterally raised prices to developers in several countries without any reason. Developers have no choice but to follow, because App Store is their only way to reach more than 1 billion iOS users.

Apple announced a price increase for the first time last month, giving developers about three weeks' notice. App Store pricing is tiered, while what Apple does is increase the cost of all predetermined tiers. For example, the lowest level has jumped to 1.19 euros, while the highest level has risen from 999 euros to 1199 euros. The full pricing hierarchy is listed on Apple's website.

CTOnews.com learned that in addition to using euro currencies, Apple has also raised pricing in Chile, Egypt, Japan, Malaysia, Pakistan, Poland, South Korea, Sweden and Vietnam.

Foreign media MacRumors pointed out that developers in the euro area can lower App Store pricing or pass on higher costs to consumers, but as Sweeney pointed out, developers must use Apple App Store if they want to provide applications to users on iPhone and iPad.

At present, Epic Games and Apple are engaged in a long legal battle over App Store policy. Sweeney and his company deliberately violated App Store rules and then filed a lawsuit against Apple, asking the court to order Apple to allow third-party app stores to operate on iOS devices.

The lawsuit is not in Epic Games's favor, and Apple is not required to support other app stores. The two companies are currently going through a lengthy appeal process, and Apple also faces legislation from several countries, which may eventually require it to make some changes to allow side loading.
