CTOnews.com October 5, Microsoft released the Windows 11 2022 feature update in September. The update is gradually being rolled out to users with PC-compatible devices. The system requirements have not changed since the 21H2 version, which means that only supported PC is needed to get updates. But according to the latest report, Microsoft seems to have blocked system updates on dynamic disks.

The German media Deskmodder said its forum members noticed the problem when they tried to upgrade the Windows 11 22H2 version in place on dynamic disks. There was no problem in previous versions of 21H2. When trying to upgrade, the error message 0x8007001 pops up, usually due to disk-related problems. The upgrade process went smoothly after the user tried to swap the install.wim file in the 22H2 settings with 21H2.

CTOnews.com learned that dynamic disks provide more features than basic disks, such as the ability to create volumes (cross-partition volumes and striped volumes) on multiple disks, running RAID 5, and so on, although it has its limitations. However, Microsoft generally no longer recommends dynamic disks. Instead, the company recommends using its storage space and hardware RAID controller to implement functions historically provided by dynamic disk settings. This may be one of the reasons why 22H2 failed to install on a dynamic disk. Microsoft said

"dynamic disks have been deprecated from Windows and we no longer recommend using them. Instead, we recommend using basic disks, or newer storage space technologies when you want to aggregate disks into large volumes. If you want to mirror Windows-booted volumes, it may be more appropriate to use hardware RAID controllers, such as those on many motherboards."

Users can check whether it is a basic disk or a dynamic disk by following these steps:

Enter disk Management by right-clicking the start menu button, or run diskmgmt.msc in the Win+R dialog box. Or right-click this computer or computer-manage-disk management. View the label of Volume and the capacity option. This will show whether the disk type is basic or dynamic. It also displays the partition style, either GPT or MBR.
