CTOnews.com, Oct. 5 (Reuters)-Tesla said on Tuesday local time that it would remove ultrasonic sensors from vehicles this month because it will continue to use only cameras in safety and driving assistance functions.

Tesla's car now has 12 ultrasonic sensors installed on the front and rear bumper. Short-range acoustic sensors are mainly used for parking and detecting close objects.

Speaking of ultrasound sensors, Guidehouse Insights analyst Sam Abuelsamid said: "this will save them a few dollars. I mean, these things are very cheap."

Tesla began to give up radar sensors last year because of a shortage of chips. Elon Musk, chief executive of Tesla, has said that Tesla can fully self-drive through cameras, but he has failed to achieve his goal of introducing self-driving taxis that do not require drivers.

Tesla's Autopilot system faces increasing regulatory, legal and public scrutiny after a number of accidents.

CTOnews.com learned that Tesla said that ultrasonic sensors for Model 3 and Model Y will be removed worldwide in the coming months and in Model S and Model X in 2023.

Tesla pointed out that this change will temporarily restrict the automatic parking function, but will not affect the collision safety rating.
